On proper branched coverings and a question of Vuorinen

We study global injectivity of proper branched coverings from the open Euclidean n$n$-ball onto an open subset of the Euclidean n$n$-space in the case where the branch set is compact. In particular, we show that such mappings are homeomorphisms when n=3$n=3$ or when the branch set is empty. This gives a positive answer to the corresponding cases of a question of Vuorinen. Poincaré duality for open sets in Euclidean spaces

Todistamme tässä työssä Poincarén dualiteetin Euklidisten avaruuksien avoimille joukoille. Annamme lyhyen johdatuksen differentiaaligeometriaan ja määrittelemme de Rham -kohomologian käsitteen. Itse Poincarén dualiteetin todistuksen aloitamme muutamalla aputuloksella. Näytämme ensin, että Poincarén dualiteetti pätee joukoille, jotka ovat diffeomorfisia avaruuteen R^n . Todis- tamme sitten Poincarén dualiteetin avointen joukkojen yhdisteille erinäisten lisäoletusten vallitessa. Tätä varten esittelemme Mayer–Vietoris jonon de Rham -kohomologialle. Eukleideen geometriaa

Eukleides Aleksandrialainen oli kreikkalainen matemaatikko, joka loi noin 300 eaa. euklidisen geometrian. Hän julkaisi euklidisen geometrian perustana olevat aksioomat ja perusolettamukset teoksessaan Alkeet. Eukleideen teos on säilynyt koulujen geometrian opetuksen pohjana jopa 1800–luvulle asti. Päälähteenä tutkielmassa on käytetty Eukleideen teoksen Pekka Aschanin suomennosta ja sen nykysuomennosta kommentteineen, jonka on toimittanut Lauri Kahanpää teoksessa Alkeet, Kuusi ensimmäistä kirjaa eli tasogeometria. In this paper, I identify and analyse regular geometric forms that appear in nineteenth-century Finnish author Aleksis Kivi’s texts. His characters and his narrators exemplify these forms to the reader. The characters’ environments are geometrically described, mapped and constructed in Seven Brothers, and geometric figures also exist in several of Kivi’s novels, plays and poems. Circles are the most common of these figures. Thus, I concentrate on expanding and converging regular geometric forms that connect to circles. peerReviewed

A remark on two notions of flatness for sets in the Euclidean space

In this note we compare two ways of measuring the $n$-dimensional "flatness" of a set $S\subset \mathbb{R}^d$, where $n\in \mathbb{N}$ and $d>n$. The first one is to consider the classical Reifenberg-flat numbers $\alpha(x,r)$ ($x \in S$, $r>0$), which measure the minimal scaling-invariant Hausdorff distances in $B_r(x)$ between $S$ and $n$-dimensional affine subspaces of $\mathbb{R}^d$. The second is an `intrinsic' approach in which we view the same set $S$ as a metric space (endowed with the induced Euclidean distance).
